As seen in our newly launched Fall 2017 Fashion & Styling Issue, we are proud to have the multi-talented radio host, tv personality and blogger – Nira Arora contribute ‘Nira’s Hot List’:
I am now officially a mom of three! My son Shae is six years old, my middle son, Aavi, is now four, plus we welcomed a baby girl, who is now 5 months old and her name is Jaya! I’ve been around the new baby block a few times now and it never ceases to amaze me how much changes every time! There are so many new ideas, solutions and products out there every year. I thought I would give you a little glimpse of some of my must haves – these in my personal opinion are things worth investing in. Enjoy!
Birth Day Gift – Pyrrha
I’m a true believer in a piece of jewellery to go hand in hand with the memory of having a baby. I’m not into the labels that may go along with this ritual – which is usually performed by dad and given to mom. Some like to refer to it as a ‘Push Present’. I’ve never been fond of that name. I like to refer to it as a ‘Birth Day’ gift – a sincere gesture of thoughtfulness and a precious memory to associate with one of the most, if not the most amazing day of your life! I still remember my mom wearing this modest yet gorgeous pendant when I was a kid, and she told me that my dad bought this for her when I was born and that one day she would give it to me. She gave it to me when I got married and I have such sentiment attached to that necklace. I wanted the same for my kids!
Expense has nothing to do with it – it’s the beautiful association that I’m a fan of. If you are a Dad-to-be or a brand new Papa, I’m about to give you the best gift idea for the woman who just brought into the world the most important person in your life! And if you are a mom who wants to get herself an amazing gift (because you know you deserve it, and yes you do!) well then I shall say “you’re welcome” in advance!
I’m absolutely in love with the Pyrrha pieces. They have a been a favorite of mine for quite some time and Hollywood stars have taken a huge liking to their pieces as well. This husband and wife duo created powerful statement pieces that you will wear and treasure forever. The pieces in the Pyrrha line are cast in reclaimed silver, bronze and 14k gold from authentic 19th century wax seals and made in Vancouver! Every design has a symbolic meaning culled from family heraldry. You can order from their collection or have something personally made for you. I had pendants made for each of my boys when they were born with their names engraved on them, and now I did the same for my newest addition- Baby Jaya. I can’t wait to pass down these pieces to my children one day!
This is the Tree Engravable Talisman
This Latin talisman reads ‘Virtus Vera Nobilitas’, or ‘Virtue is True Nobility’ meaning that being ethical is more valuable than being wealthy or powerful. The tree represents life and the mystical connection between earth and the heavens.
Sensory Knots – Bois Bites
Let them chew, let them explore and let them play – words of wisdom from the creators of Bois Bites. Bois Bites provides the safest and prettiest teethers I have ever seen, and do remember, I’m on baby number three! It was a local Vancouver couple that realized they needed to make their own safe and natural product for their daughters, they came up with sensory knots.
These sensory knots are designed to encourage sensory milestones for your little one and to promote independence, while they entertain themselves and find some relief from that teething pain. These modern day rattles are easy to hold, fun to play with and safe to chew. There’s also a teether that looks like an ice-cream bar which brings back quite a bit of nostalgia from my childhood! And don’t even get me started on the pacifier clips – they are beautiful! Bois Bites have also come up with heirloom boxes featuring some of their favourite products. One of these would be the perfect gift for a friend that’s expecting.
Most importantly, with EVERY purchase Bois Bites donates a portion of proceeds to Children’s Heart Network, helping support families across British Columbia living with congenital heart disease. What an amazing cause! I also have some inside information – the founders of Bois Bites are parents and know how much work it is to be a parent – so with every purchase they include a little surprise for you! How sweet!
Teething Necklace – Lussobaby
My little one is clearly teething and it can be rough at times – both for her and for us, the parents! I would prefer not to turn to meds in this situation, because if I did, it would be every day! I try to look for alternative approaches to help her out with the teething pain and I came across the Amber Glow teething necklace at Lussobaby.
These Amber teething necklaces are made from 100% Baltic amber, which is a natural analgesic teething remedy that has been used for centuries in Europe. It is said that if a baby wears Baltic amber close to the skin it will help calm them as the natural anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties of Baltic amber provides relief to teething babies. There is a natural oil in Amber, when warmed by the skin its supposed help soothe the baby.
Don’t forget- these necklaces are made to be worn, not chewed, by teething babies, and Amber Glow recommends to remove the necklace while the baby is sleeping or unattended. These necklaces are ideal for both boys and girls.
Both my boys wore these and now it’s time for baby #3 to have her turn!
Baby Milestone Day Grow With Me Day Week Month Year Blanket – Little Lamb and Ivy
This is one of the cutest ideas ever! It’s the perfect way to mark and keep track of your little one’s special milestones. Simply place your bambino in the circle design on the blanket, and either place a frame or item around the date (or edit the picture to circle the date) and take a picture! It’s absolutely perfect for the baby book!
The fabric of the blanket is super soft and it’s made with a modern technical fabric that absorbs very little water, unlike cotton. Cotton can become clammy and moist when wet with sweat, these blankets will pickup moisture and spread it out – which makes the moisture evaporate more quickly! So baby stays cool and dry. This applies really well when used for swaddling, napping, or even having playtime inside or outside. It’s super breathable too – letting in air and moisture out.
If you’re a fan of shopping local – this blanket is for you. It’s handmade in Vancouver from scratch – including the design of the pattern. The fabric is printed locally, and sewn with the final touches.
You can get your baby’s name written on it as well – super cute and super adorable!
Building Parental Confidence – Dawn Whittaker
Having children can take a toll on you, we don’t need to be rocket scientists to figure that out! But sometimes we forget that something as simple as sleep training can be life changing – for the baby and for you!!
I wanted to sleep train Jaya, who at that time was about four months old. I found parent consultant Dawn Whittaker!
Dawn works with clients on a one on one basis, whether in person or remotely, to support you with your child’s sleep, potty, and behaviour challenges. Dawn understands and knows that each family is different with specific needs. Each plan is tailored to meet the individual needs, comfort, and lifestyle of the family.
As a former nanny, night nanny, and trouble shooting nanny, Dawn has a ridiculous amount of experience in all child-rearing related issues. Her experience as both a childcare provider and as a parent has provided her with the wisdom needed to work with other people’s children.
Over the last 9 years, Dawn has supported over 4000 thousand families worldwide, to help them achieve confidence in their own parenting abilities.
What I loved about Dawn was how available she was to me and how she provided a solution when I needed it without judgement. She gets it, she’s a mom of three, she knows how hard everything is and can be.
My main concern was to get Jaya into a healthy sleep routine that worked for us as a family, and Dawn helped us get there. But, if there is any parenting issue that you are struggling with, you can send her a note and I’m positive she can help you out!
