I’m 34 and feeling’ fiiiine!
Hello friends! Kyla Getty here. For those of you who are just discovering I Like Her Style Vancouver, I am one half of the co-founding team. Our current issue is on stands for Spring. With so much to celebrate during these happy Spring months, my partner Jody and I decided that ‘Celebrations’ would be the perfect theme to tie the issue together.
You see, not only does Spring bring Easter, Mother’s Day, Wedding and Baby Showers galore… it is also the season for both Jody’s and MY birthdays! If you’ve been following us on our Insta Stories over @ilikeherstylevancouver – you’ll also know that April also includes my eldest daughter’s birthday – and this year we also celebrated my mom’s 60th and Jody’s mom’s 65th!
Whew! We have truly been party girls through and through!
As promised in the Spring Magazine issue, I am sharing with you some personal snap shots from my birthday celebrations. This is a window into my real world – no staged, professional photography here!
I come from a long line of ‘celebrators’. With both my family and my husband’s side – special occasions are acknowledged with enthusiasm. I am fortunate that both sides of the family get along so well, our celebrations include everyone – and are always a good time!
Because of the nature of just how full our April calendar was this year, we joined my 34th and my daughter Kaitlyn’s 10th into one evening celebration at my home. Family gathered with chinese food takeout, festive decorations, and three… yes 3… ah-mazing cakes!
Kaitlyn and I were happy to ‘share’ our birthday celebration this year. I knew it was a relaxed evening at home with takeout, so I kept decorations bright and inexpensive. (I knew that the noodles would fly! lol) I had asked Kaitlyn for the colour theme she would like and she said “Pink, Purple, Black, White, Silver and Gold”. We decided to take a stroll at our local party store and dollar store to see what inspired us.
The purchase I was most excited about for this event was the letter light box, which we actually picked up from the dollar store. It was $30 – which is obviously a steep price tag for a dollar store… but when you think of the versatility that something like this brings, it was a great purchase – allowing us to light up the table in a fun way and customize our message. Who needs birthday candles?
One of the oldest tricks in my party plan book is to use wrapping paper as an inexpensive table runner. I recommend that every woman own a great plain white table cloth (as well as a felt protector to go beneath). Once you have this quality set-up, the sky is the limit to create fun embellishments on top.
The pop of pink from this magenta paper instantly transformed the party scene and set the colour scheme off.
I used stickers to create a custom design in the centre and the edges. This gold chandelier and blingy ’10’ and ’34’ made the runner one-of-a-kind.
Balloons are another go-to for me. They are inexpensive and add a big injection of colour and theme. For this party, I lined the doorway with fun balloons overhead.
My father in law, Paul missed his calling as the cake boss. He is not only talented with creating the perfect cake decor, but the cakes and flavours that he creates are the BEST I have ever had. One day, I’m going to have to learn his secrets… but for now, it’s too much fun being surprised by his creations. You’ll see above that a fabulous cake was created for both Kaitlyn AND myself. Can you guess which was for who?
Above this shot: My mom knows that at heart, I love a good old fashion DQ cake. She collaborated with Paul to order a custom DQ cake that would match my baked cake, perfectly!
Thank you to Jody for capturing this shot of my family just after the candles went out! It’s hard to get the perfect shot of us all at the same time… especially when a certain 2 year old seems to be ready to pounce on the cake!
You know that your loved ones really ‘get’ you when your gifts from everyone start to all match! These are some of the spoils that my lovely family and friends bestowed upon me. (Although the cards themselves were frame-worthy gifts in themselves!) I am excited to have a couple of new gift cards to ‘play’ with… though I still have them burning a hole in my wallet! 😉 Oh, and that’s NOT a cigar holder ladies… it’s a tampon holder – with BLING! (What will they think of next?!)
I’m in love with these two matching bow rings that my mom got me from Pandora. They will beautifully flank either side of my pink stone Pandora ring!
Girls Day on the Town
The following weekend, the celebrations continued. For Kaitlyn’s ‘friend party’ this year, Kaitlyn chose to have a bestie accompany her for a day on the town – I Like Her Style Vancouver STYLE! (Followed by a slumber party, of course!)
Jody and I were only too happy to show these two pre-teens the ropes – starting off with mani pedi’s at BLING Nail Studio.
After our tips ‘n toes were looking fine, we took a trip to Karameller, only to find that Jody had pre-arranged a special surprise with the owner!
Jody picked out the perfect birthday balloon for our girl to bring along. We toured some beautiful areas of Vancouver and enjoyed a fun late lunch at Cactus Club in Coal Harbour. Afterward, the girls enjoyed watching the float planes take off and arrive. It was a beautiful day to celebrate being an April girl!
