Getting in the zone! That is something you will hear me say often as it allows me to bring out the best version of myself when I am in work mode. Working in a creative business requires you to take your mind to places they have never been and what better way to get there than surrounding yourself with things that inspire you. Those around me may giggle at my routine – Kyla who shares the studio with me and gets a front row seat to my madness! Even writing this post, which started in a quiet coffee shop (not my inspiration zone), moved to a loud restaurant (elements of my inspiration zone), and has ended at my desk in my ultimate zone that I control! See below for some of the little details that make or break my productivity potential.
MUSIC – The key to setting the tone for my inspiration zone is music…silence is the death of me! Or at least a sure fire way to turn my creative juice fizz flat real quick! I have always been that person who studies with music on, plays music from the minute they wake up to the minute they go to bed. And loud! There is a time and place for quiet tunes, but my creative space calls for some pump me up feel good vibes. My song choices are really all over the map – from 90’s Hip Hop to Country for the soul. It’s a dance party when you enter the Jody Zone, so be prepared to have some head bobbing, toe tapping inspiration.
CREATIVE OUTLET FOR THE MIND – I like to start my work day off with an activity to get those creative braincells flowing that is completely unrelated to work. Some of my favourite choices are a word search puzzle – you heard me right, I am an old soul in many ways and this old school past time is sure sign of that. I also enjoy colouring. Before this adult colouring was a trend it was a trend that never left me growing up. I love putting colour to the paper, it’s so therapeutic. Or it could be as simple as writing down my daily gratitude!
WORDS OF WISDOM – I am a woman who is inspired by the power of words and have always filled my life with quotes of inspiration. I have practiced reading a quote a day for quite some time now and I love how language and thoughts put into words can change perspectives and provoke a deeper meaning to life. Through good times and bad, quotes have filled my life with energy and my office space needs the same. I keep myself surrounded by quotes throughout my space so that in a glance at any moment I can be lifted reading power words around me.
ORGANIZATION – I will admit that I have a hard time throwing things away as I fear that I will need it for something in the future, but my office ‘hoarding’ has gotten better. One thing is for sure, I may have a lot of s*#t, but I do not like a mess or clutter in my workspace. I like to use boxes, jars, storage units, etc to hide away all the goods and keep a clean slate for my mind to not be distracted. Drawer organizers are non-negotiable, everything has a place and is easily accessible. I tend to have ‘shiny keys’ syndrome and can be easily distracted by what’s around me…put it away for another day!
CANDLES – My mood is lead by my nose – I swear I must have been a dog in my previous life, lol. I gravitate towards the scent sections on a shopping trip and find myself taken away by the thoughts provoked by each scent. I live in the light in many ways, but especially amongst my candle light. As soon as I step into the office I light my candle, the act of lighting the match is like igniting the flame for my day and fires me up to rock it! This passion extends beyond my workspace as I have a home filled with candles and feel the most at ease when surrounded by candlelight.
AGENDA – I cannot live without my agenda, it is my Bible! I am a pen and paper kind of gal and my agenda is no exception – electronic agendas and I don’t mix. The act of writing down tasks, thoughts, goals onto paper instills a stronger sense of obligation and motivation to complete it. I like to have a plan and believe that we all have intentions to achieve our goals but the thing that is often holding us back is taking action and being realistic. Plotting out your days, weeks, and months ahead allows you to set yourself up for success. My agenda is on me at all times and feeling organized inspires me to take action!
VISION BOARD – Nothing better than a vision board filled with all things inspired to get you in the zone! I am a big believer in ‘what you think about your bring about’ and the power of visualizing. My practice of visualization started at a very young age playing competitive sports. I would visualize before every big game and was in awe at the minds ability to lead you to manifestation. As my life continued I used this practice in many forms and creating a vision board is was one I enjoy the most. We have a space in our office where we can pin up pictures, quotes, and anything that inspires our creativity with building our brand. I also have a personal vision board with goals and aspirations for my life as a whole. If you can see it, you can be it!
LIVE IN COLOUR – You may have heard those words come out of my mouth as they do often – I live in colour! Colour brings me so much joy and energy, so I need to have pops of it throughout my space. I am a big fan of a black and white base for decor and that allows your colour story to change as your heart desires. A vibrant pink and lime green seem to be two that consistently pop up in my joyous colour filled moments. I would have to admit that I have been quoted saying that animal print is my favourite colour. Adding a hint of cheetah to my space is sure to turn me into a creative vixen. Metallics and mixed metals can be a shining light that sparks my creativity just the same as a vibrant rainbow. Beyond the decor, I write in colour and burst with happiness as my pages of notes or my calendar fills with colour.
NOTEBOOKS – I have a strong love for notebooks and journals, check out my blog post back in September for some of my ideas for putting those adorable ones on your coffee table to use. In my office space I like to have a variety of notebooks around so that when a thought comes to mind, which seems to be at the oddest times, I can write it down. Like many in a creative business, the best ideas come when you least expect it and sometimes it is a series of small thoughts that lead to the final golden nugget of an idea. My love for pen on paper often has me writing the 1st draft of an article or plans for an event in a notebook. The key is they need to be fun in print/colour/design so they can double as a decor item in your space.
REVOLVING DECOR – I like to update my space and keep it fresh and exciting to fuel my inspiration. Having shelves is a great way to decorate in a way that can be changed often. I like to have pieces that are extensions of my passions – fashion, styling, florals, makeup, my dog, teaching – displayed around me as reminders of things that energize me. Clipboards acting as ‘frames’ on the wall for photos allows an easy change up on the spot. Buying a variety of silk florals that are stored away and changed up regularly to create a new vibe in your space is a cost effective way to have florals in your life. Of course, if I could keep real florals alive I would go that route, but this gal has a reputation for killing cactus!
May you be inspired to get into your inspiration zone everyday!
Lots of love,
