Mortgage Broker Jourdane Lal began a career in retail banking right out of high school . “It was a perfect fit for me at the time – a professional atmosphere, hours that complemented attending school at BCIT in the evenings and an income in line with my goal to save the money to buy my first home.” Jourdane’s love for connecting with others and finding solutions for one of the biggest components of peoples lives in finance was extremely rewarding. She stayed in that industry for 14 years.
“After my third babe, the time had come to make a shift that better balanced my need to raise my children in the most hands-on way I could while fulfilling the drive I have to work with and take care of others.” Jourdane became a licensed Mortgage Broker in 2015. The career shift provided her with challenges and learning curves – and she admits that it has been one of the most humbling career decisions she’s made.
“Building relationships beyond business” has become this caring and compassionate woman’s mantra, and it shows!
Q: Describe your business – what makes it unique?
What makes my business difference is: me. There are countless talented, well-seasoned and incredibly insightful brokers in the lower mainland but none of them are me. I take great pride in my ability to connect with others and make them feel safe and confident in making major financial commitments for themselves and their families.
Q: Where did your business start out and what did you do to get it to where you are today?
I started in 2015 as a broker and I attended countless networking events, connected with different groups on social media and most importantly, I decided to just be me. In a way, the years at the bank were tremendous for building my skill set, knowledge and capabilities. However, sitting behind a desk, fulfilling expectations, and the pressure of always competing was never really utilizing my full capability to get to know my clients on the same level as I do now. Becoming a mortgage broker has allowed people to feel well taken care of and tell their friends and family about me. I believe referrals from friends and family is the driver for any successful business. I don’t want to execute your mortgage, I want to get to know what your goals are and how I can find you the best solution to ensure they become a reality.
Q: What do you love most about what you do?
I meet most of my clients in their homes, or where is most comfortable. I take real interest in getting to know people. I am incredibly grateful to be able to have a career that allows me to help others, develop relationships and for me be so active with my children every day.
Q: Where do you see this business in 5 years?
I see my business thriving. I see an amazing network of clients who have trusted me and allowed me to have helped them reach their goals, relieve stress or build their wealth.
Q: What is a passion project you are working on?
I found myself saying sometime late last year (one too many times) “they should teach that in high school!” I was talking about basic personal financial knowledge. The importance of establishing and keeping good credit, budgeting, saving and investing for your future.
I decided it was something I was passionate about and neeed to fill in the gap. I started working on a speaker series to be delivered during Grade 12 career management course related classes to prepare our future for a success finacial future.
I am still fine tuning the workbook but hope to be speaking in high schools in the lower mainland by the 2017 /2018 school year.
Q: Tell us about some of the most exciting projects that you’ve been part of!
I Like Her Style Vancouver! Seriously! I am amazed at the sense of community. I feel honoured to have a spot in the magazine and feel an enormous sense of pride knowing I am connected with such powerful, inspiring women.
The other project I was absolutely so excited about being a part of recently was the annual Dare to Dream Soiree hosted by the the ‘Badass Lady Boss’, Gennica Whitney. This woman brought together a group of incredibly gorgeous souls who collaborated and raised funds for the Free to Be program sponsored by Raw Beauty Talks. The friendships I developed will last a lifetime and there was so much beauty of the process of coming together to give back for our communities youth. Amazing.
Q: What are a few of your must-haves?
Oh I am so basic. Coffee & coconut oil.
Q: Who inspires you?
My children. Their little faces, sweet smiles and enormous hearts are my constant inspiration to provide them with the importance of leading by example. My Mom. She is the pillar of strength and grace in my life. My brothers. They are my soulmates up in heaven who inspire me each day to never give up, no what matter what life throws at you.
Q: What’s the number one value that you take with you through your personal life that extends into your business?
To be me. To always be authentic, genuine, and kind.
Q: What adversity have you faced in business?
I have found many people have the misconception that brokers cost money or that they don’t have their best interest in mind. Coming from a banking background, I used to think the same way. This is actually quite the opposite. No matter how much you love your banker, their loyalty is to their employer. As a mortgage broker, my loyalty is always to my client’s best interest and my services are free!
Q: What would you like to say to young women with similar career goals?
I just heard the most amazing acronym at a Vancity Business Babes event from the ever gorgeous blogger, Alicia Haque! It has become my new silent mantra. JFDI. JUST F*&%$# DO IT.
Q: What is your best promotional tool?
Social Media. It allows me to showcase parts of my business and parts of my everyday life. I truly believe authenticity to character is the cornerstone of my business and I want people to know I am hard working, dedicated and a mom raising 3 children and trying to make a difference in lives.
Q: Why is the Lower Mainland a great place to live and work?
BC business babes have each others backs! There is this underbelly of connection and rapport of women in so many communities across the lower mainland. It is refreshing to discover new friendships with good people. The views in the lower mainland are gorgeous, whether you live near the mountains or near the water, raising a business and a family in the lower mainland is always a good idea.
